While spring has its own bouquet of beautiful smells — lilacs, fresh-mown grass, even rain — its aroma in our vineyard is not always so pleasant.
Chicken shit. This is what we spread three days ago here at Roots. Sure the bags of fertilizer (see photo above) are beautifully illustrated, but what's inside is not pretty, at least for my nose —the odor reminds me of what our dog smells like when he "rolls" in the neighbor's cow pasture.
We've also started our sulfur applications, which has its own distinct — BAD — smell, too. We spray the organic element to prevent powdery mildew. Sulfur is STINKY — and sticks to the dog who then climbs on couches and rolls around on the carpet. It smells so bad, I almost prefer the eau de chicken shit...
